This copy of J.M.W. Turner’s The Dogana and Santa Maria della Salute, Venice allowed me to closely study his technique and approach to light and atmosphere.

Working on medium-weight, coarsely woven linen, I layered transparent washes over a textured white ground and used thick strokes of white paint—applied with a palette knife, as in Turner’s original—to recreate the impasto highlights. This process gave me invaluable insight into how Turner captured movement and mood through his methods.
