In this plein air study of Southlands, I focused on the interplay between light and the lush vegetation shaped by the region’s history. The luminous tree on the left, framed by layered greens and soft sky, reflects the resilience of this landscape, which has been nurtured for generations. Southlands, part of the Musqueam people’s ancestral territory, carries a quiet weight—its natural beauty intertwined with its cultural past. Through subtle brushwork, I aimed to capture not just the scene, but the enduring relationship between the land and its caretakers.
