River Sketch I
Oil on panel
8 x 10 inches
In River Sketch I, I focused on a rapid composition study, anchoring the close-up of the tree trunk against the subtle form of a container ship on the Fraser River. This quick plein air piece, akin to a pochade—a term used historically for swift, impressionistic sketches—allowed me to experiment with raw, direct color mixing on the panel. The Fraser River’s dynamic presence offered a striking contrast to the earthy tones of the foreground, adding depth to the composition. The unfinished brushwork and visible undertones emphasize spontaneity and the fleeting light of the moment.
